Overview

Oriental Impression Grill Restaurant at 370 Victoria St, Richmond, offers a genuine taste of Northern Chinese BBQ in a casual, bustling setting. This Chinese eatery is perfect for those seeking a lively atmosphere without the need to dress up. It’s a spot where friends and families gather late into the evening, indulging in an array of grilled skewers and traditional dishes that awaken the senses.

The dining experience is hands-on and communal. Customers mark their choices on paper menus—offered in both Mandarin and English—and watch as servers deliver fresh, smoky skewers straight from the grill. The menu is extensive, featuring standout items such as Chicken Skin Skewers, Spicy Oily Noodles, Grilled Scallops with garlic, Lamb Ribs dusted with cumin and Sichuan peppercorns, and the uniquely textured Cold Noodles. Pairing these with Oriental Salad or the refreshing Bean Jelly Salad provides balance to the bold smoky flavors.

Oriental Impression’s charm lies in its vibrant, unpretentious environment. The space is tightly packed, often buzzing with noise and lively conversations, creating an authentic rustic vibe reminiscent of a traditional night market. This energy suits casual diners and groups keen to share plates over beer or the homemade yoghurt drink, making it ideal for social dinners rather than intimate dates.

While service may require some patience and proactive engagement—especially during peak hours—the self-service stations and friendly staff ease the flow. It’s a place that rewards visitors who embrace the slightly chaotic rhythm and dive into the communal spirit. The late-night hours mean you can drop by without reservations, particularly after 8:30 pm, catering to spontaneous cravings and night owls alike.

For first-timers, ordering with restraint is wise given the tempting menu variety. Sampling smaller portions allows you to explore favorites like the cumin-spiced lamb skewers or grilled oysters, avoiding overindulgence while savoring each distinct flavor. Despite minor hiccups reported by some diners—including mix-ups in orders—most find the overall food quality and authentic flavors well worth the visit.

In essence, Oriental Impression Grill Restaurant delivers a swathe of Northern Chinese BBQ delights, set in a loud, tightly packed but warm atmosphere that embraces authenticity over polish. It’s a must-visit for adventurous food lovers craving smoky, grilled dishes in a convivial environment on Richmond’s vibrant Victoria Street.

casual settings, where you don't need to dress up but still can get nice food. I normally don't book, but go there quite late after 8.30pm.

This Northern Chinese BBQ restaurant is a popular grunge-y late night spot that stands out amongst other offerings on Victoria Street. It's definitely an experience, but one you have to be in the mood for. Standout orders were the chili oil noodles and the lamb skewers. The wheat noodles were the perfect al dente texture mixed in a flavourful oil. The lamb skewers are a must-order. Dusted in cumin, chili, Sichuan peppercorn powder. The salad was very refreshing and a perfect pairing with the BBQ skewers (which can start to taste same same after a while). Only downside is that it's too sweet. The grilled scallops with garlic was also fresh and tasty. Top tips for first-timers: - Have some restraint when ordering the skewers. The menu is huge and you'll be tempted to try lots of stuff, but the price quickly adds up. Order small quantities to try and see if you like it first. You can always add more to your order later. - Don't expect doting service. It will be challenging to flag a servers attention, especially if it's busy and you're seated outside. You'll need to advocate for yourself (self service water/sauces station is inside, ask about your food if it hasn't arrived after a while instead of waiting there) - It's great drinking food, so grab a beer and enjoy. If you don't want alcohol, their homemade yoghurt drink is delicious

you get exactly what you pay for here at oriental impression! the menu here works similar to a yum cha: you tick what you want. the menu is available in mandarin and english but you may have to ask for the english version. there are many options, but we definitely over ordered. don’t worry though as takeaway is available! unfortunately, some of the food we received was not what we had ordered and instead we were given the items below what we ticked. some of this wasn’t the best food, while some were new discoveries . the food is cooked for you and the waiters carry your skewers to your table. i very much recommend two dishes (see captions below some photos) and personally loved the chicken feet and ear wood mushrooms (which i know some don’t like so i didn’t list as recommended) i was quite disappointed in the Taiwanese sausages here- they were also quite expensive. the restaurant itself was very tightly packed! loud, classic environment for this type of restaurant. we almost had to shout to talk, but it was all part of the experience! would very much come back for more great prices for the amount.

If you are after rustic Asian restaurant vibe, this is the place to go! When we went there, the restaurant was packed with families with children. It was quite noisy, so maybe not the best place to have dates haha. Food, however, was great. Only a little bit in the pricier side.

This place is off the charts good. It’s absolute chaos, but it’s a part of the charm. You choose what you want and mark it on the paper menu provided and the things just come out one after the other. The flavours are so good and everything is tasty. I was so impressed I forgot to take more photos of food, because we got a lot of stuff. Everything from bread on a stick to dumplings, you can get it. A great place to experience with friends! Will be coming back.

This was my second visit to the restaurant, so I knew what to expect. The skewered meats were delicious, especially the lamb. However, the pork belly skewers were sparse. During my first visit, the grilled trotters were dry and tough, but this time they were tender and the meat came off easily. The dumplings we ordered, though not photographed, were disappointing. The skin was too thick and the filling was a bit dry.

Definitely one of the better Chinese bbq/grill places in Melbourne. Not the cheapest but good. Would recommend calling in advance to make a booking especially from Friday-Sunday. The skewers are pretty good especially the lamb!!
